'Day in the life' of centre volunteer Samantha Will

I’ve been volunteering with the Angus, Fife and Tayside Animal Rescue And Rehoming Centre for 18 months now.  I’m a community champion for ASDA, so I’m able to volunteer at charities our customers are passionate about.  The Scottish SPCA is very important to them, which is great for me as I am equally passionate about animals.

I adore being at the centre each week, I call it my ‘animal therapy’!

I regularly fall in love with the animals in our care.  There was a beautiful wee puppy called Cookie who was like my shadow, we had a really special bond.  He used to lie down the side of my leg, he was a wee sweetheart.  I’m delighted he went to a loving forever home.

We already have a large cat and two Guinea pigs at home who we adore.

Today, I’m cleaning out the small animals room which currently has rabbits, ferrets, cockatiels, a degu, a leopard gecko, two kittens and a baby bunny!

The baby rabbit is called Twinkle and she is adorable.

There is a lot of hard, physical work.  People sometimes don’t realise it’s not all playing with bunnies!  There’s a lot of poo involved but you have to take the rough with the smooth, as I get to socialise (play!) with them once all the jobs are done.

I brought my 12 year old daughter to the centre for ‘bring your child to work day’ as she is also animal mad.  This is her dream job, to rescue animals, and she wants to do this when she’s old enough.  She’s already rescued a fledgling who is currently recuperating at the National Wildlife Rescue Centre.

It’s wonderful working with the team at the centre.  Everyone is so dedicated and they really care about what they are doing.  Dale, the assistant manager, and Meghan, the senior animal care assistant, both started as volunteers so it’s a fantastic place to start if you want a career with animals.
